ABSTRACT

The cultural heterogeneity of the United Kingdom is to some extent acknowledged in legislative frameworks and guidelines that underpin policies and practices concerned with employment and public services. Prominent among these is the 1976 Race Relations Act which outlaws direct and indirect discrimination on the basis of race, colour, nationality and ethnic or national origin. Notable, however, is the paucity of legislation or guidelines which address other ‘dimensions’ of ethnicity such as religion and language.
