ABSTRACT

This chapter attempts to record how changes in information technology have influenced developments in music libraries. It is necessary to describe the general developments in information technology in libraries to place the changes affecting music libraries in context but efforts are made to draw out the music examples at all times. Written as a celebration of the last 50 years of International Association of Music Libraries (IAML) (UK), the chapter makes particular reference to the work of the UK Branch and, where relevant, to its parent association IAML. It attempts to draw examples of developments and projects in music from all sectors of the library community but at particularly significant stages the academic community has led the way. In 1953 when IAML(UK) was formed, computers were far away from most peoples’ lives and they had no direct impact on music librarianship.
