ABSTRACT

This chapter provides Samuel Hopkins' address to the People of New-England. In his address he says that the very great Importance of attaching the Indians to their Interest lies in not only by treating them justify and kindly, but by using proper Endeavours to settle Christianity among them. It is well known, that the Indians are generally addicted to Drunkenness, and that when they have tasted a little Liquor, they have a strong Thirst for more, and will part with any Thing they have, for a sufficient Quantity to make them drunk. The Indians are as capable of hearing Reasons, and giving them their Weight, as other Men; and it is because they know not what Christianity is, that they esteem themselves Christians, in their present Circumstances.
