ABSTRACT

One of the functions of the sociologist is to enlighten public opinion by finding out and publishing the facts. But when he is concerned with social pathology, something else comes in: values. In recent years psychiatrists have come to think of the psychosis called schizophrenia in terms of social disability. New methods of treatment have made it possible for patients in mental hospitals to live a more social life with beneficial results, and it has been found that they are unexpectedly responsive to the whole social atmosphere of the hospital, including the relation between members of the staff at all grades. The problem for adolescents in adjusting themselves to take their place as respectable adults in our society is a complicated one, but the majority are successful. The sociologist is professionally more interested in cases in which a boy is brought up in a sub-culture which differs in its standards from the official norms.
