ABSTRACT

The Catholic, Apostolic, and Roman association is the largest of all European and American religious associations, and… is unquestionably still very powerful, although it has declined considerably since the pontificate of Leo X, who was its founder. The Christian religion teaches the faithful that their aim on earth should be to improve as quickly as possible the moral and physical condition of the poor. Theology is the only science taught in the seminaries, the only science which the Pope and the Cardinals feel obliged to pursue. The Protestant religion, as conceived by Luther, is still only a Christian heresy. The more society improves morally and physically, the greater the division between intellectual and manual work. The architects should build temples so that the preachers, poets, musicians, painters, and sculptors can, at will, fill the souls of the faithful with feelings of terror or joy and hope.
