ABSTRACT

A key challenge of any law library and information service is enabling users to keep up to date with the shifting landscape of rules and regulations and, at the same time, to be commercially aware. Law libraries have a range of online tools at their disposal, based on the principles, which they can use to provide a current awareness service (CAS). This chapter provides an overview of these key tools and their characteristics. This information is intended to inform the decisions of those who are considering creating, rationalising or maintaining a CAS to meet the information needs of their users. The motivation for information professionals to consider the effectiveness of the CAS that is operating in their organizations can be fuelled by many different concerns. Legal information is no exception, with indexing that covers an array of subjects and legal concepts, which is extremely useful when setting up alerts.
