ABSTRACT

This chapter provides ten golden rules of good governance. The overriding aim of project and programme management governance is to ensure that an organization achieves the objectives successfully with confidence, transparency and control. The UK Corporate Governance Code states that 'Governance is about what the board of a company does and how it sets the values of the company'. Good governance is about: accountability, transparency, probity and focus on the sustainable success of an entity over the longer term. Governance arrangements for individual projects and programmes are linked to the overall governance of project management primarily through the role of the project/programme sponsor, the corporate project management method, portfolio management and review and assurance bodies. Good practice guidelines for governance have been developed over many years to deal with common causes of failure. The best published guidelines for project management governance are contained in the APM publication Directing Change.
