ABSTRACT

This chapter explains the most important standards for programme management and how various target audiences can use them. Programme management can be traced back to the early 1950s in the USA. The Department of Defense developed several handbooks for the design of complex aerospace and defence systems, which formed the basis for programme management. The International Project Management Association (IPMA) was the world's first international project management association. The approach of IPMA was mainly to improve the competencies of individuals involved in projects, programmes and portfolios through a standard, and to offer education and training as well as certification schemes through its National Certification Bodies in more than 60 countries worldwide. Global Alliance of Project Performance Standards offers 'A Framework for Performance Based Competency Standards for Program Managers', which is intended to support the development and recognition of local standards and to provide a sound basis for mutual recognition and transferability of project and programme management qualifications.
