ABSTRACT

Treatment and Education of Autistic and Related Communication Handicapped Children (TEACCH) had the historical accident, the good luck, of stumbling on the scene when psychoanalytic misunderstanding of autistic children and their families reached new levels. That theoretical understanding of autism, really the misunderstanding, was that parents, through unconscious and other attitudes, made their children autistic, or developed the syndrome in their children through their child-rearing practices. The Carolina Living and Learning Center will be the next extension of TEACCH in North Carolina. The clinical program is an integrated residential and vocational program for thirty autistic adults, which will be built in stages. The purposes of the program were: to provide help and service for the children and their families, to develop research in the context of help and clinical work, to train professionals in the context of service, and to educate the public.
