ABSTRACT

This chapter considers the importance of leadership as a central and vital resource to address global social, environmental, and economic problems, and underscores the importance of leadership to any conversation concerning how organizations are to successfully practice responsible global management. It explores how prosocial leadership can be used to strengthen and reframe our understanding of leadership. Stewardship has been developed as an academic theory stressing both corporate social responsibility and the importance of individual leadership. The center has found that leaders who seek to take responsibility must realize their important role in supporting organizational culture because it shapes leadership competencies and capabilities. Although individual and organizational responsibility are both vital aspects of stewardship, this chapter focuses on the seminal aspect of prosocial leadership development. The chapter concludes with possible approaches and alternative strategies for developing prosocial leadership, both within and outside the classroom.
