ABSTRACT

In recognition of both the promise and complexity of off-grid renewable energy access, this chapter offers concrete recommendations and insights into best practices and business models that have led to commercial success in the off-grid solar lighting field. Using a combination of theory-based research and case studies, it examines how successful ventures incorporate local entrepreneurs in their supply chain and work in partnership with a variety of other entities. The chapter considers the importance of broadening business models and building local capacity to fill institutional voids. The prominence of energy in the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and in almost every sustainability initiative is no accident. Globally, energy use and production are responsible for two-thirds of greenhouse gas emissions. Solar lighting can undoubtedly change lives and contribute substantially to the achievements of the SDGs. It also represents a growing business opportunity.
