ABSTRACT

This chapter is a comprehensive reference manual providing information on the Motor Assessment Scale (MAS), which is a performance-based test “designed to measure the progress of stroke patients”. The MAS measures eight different motor function (both lower and upper extremities) and, in addition, tone on the affected side. The MAS is a widely used and adequately validated evaluation of lower and upper extremity motor functioning. A brief history of the instrument's development is provided, along with a description of item content and administration/scoring procedures. Psychometric properties are reviewed and a critical commentary is provided. Key references are cited and in most cases the actual scale is included, giving the reader easy access to the instrument.
