ABSTRACT

This chapter is a comprehensive reference manual providing information on the Frenchay Activities Index (FAI), which is primarily a self/informant rating scale, designed to measure “the broader everyday activities of normal living”. The FAI was developed for people with stroke and has also been used with older adults. The original sample of people with stroke with whom the FAI was developed was used to refine item content and examine construct validity, but no other measurement characteristics of the FAI were reported in that study. A brief history of the instrument's development is provided, along with a description of item content and administration/scoring procedures. Psychometric properties are reviewed and a critical commentary is provided. Key references are cited and in most cases the actual scale is included, giving the reader easy access to the instrument.
