ABSTRACT

This chapter is a comprehensive reference manual providing information on the Functional Independence Measure and Functional Assessment Measure (FIM+FAM) is a clinician rating scale of functional disability. The FAM items were added to the FIM to cater to the type of disablement experienced after acquired brain impairment, which often has major cognitive and psychosocial components. Training procedures for the FAM use two vignettes that are available from the Center for Outcome Measurement in Brain Injury website. The FIM+FAM shows very similar psychometric properties to the FIM. A brief history of the instrument's development is provided, along with a description of item content and administration/scoring procedures. Psychometric properties are reviewed and a critical commentary is provided. Key references are cited and in most cases the actual scale is included, giving the reader easy access to the instrument.
