ABSTRACT

This chapter is a comprehensive reference manual providing information on the Functional Independence Measure for Children (WeeFIM) is a clinician rating scale, described as measuring “functional abilities in a developmental context”. Like the FIM, the WeeFIM is not a discipline-specific instrument. A standard training programme for the WeeFIM is available. The FIM/WeeFIM is one of the very few instruments that has application across the lifespan. Psychometric properties of the WeeFIM have not been as extensively studied as the FIM, and a formal content validity study did not fully endorse the adequacy of the items to conceptually represent the six domains. A brief history of the instrument's development is provided, along with a description of item content and administration/scoring procedures. Psychometric properties are reviewed and a critical commentary is provided. Key references are cited and in most cases the actual scale is included, giving the reader easy access to the instrument.
