ABSTRACT

This chapter is a comprehensive reference manual providing information on the Physical Self-Maintenance Scale (PSMS), which contains toileting, feeding, dressing, grooming, physical ambulation and bathing. The Instrumental Activities of Daily Living Scale (IADLS) contains telephone use, shopping, food preparation, housekeeping, laundry, transport, medication use, and finance management. The PSMS and IADLS are designed to be completed by a clinician, using information gathered from a variety of sources including the caregiver. The PSMS and IADLS are stand-alone scales that provide a brief sampling of the main features of self-care/mobility and domestic life respectively, with the IADLS more widely used than the PSMS. A brief history of the instrument's development is provided, along with a description of item content and administration/scoring procedures. Psychometric properties are reviewed and a critical commentary is provided. Key references are cited and in most cases the actual scale is included, giving the reader easy access to the instrument.
