ABSTRACT

This chapter is a comprehensive reference manual providing information on the Community Integration Questionnaire (CIQ), which was designed as a self-rating scale developed to measure community integration, “the converse of handicap”. Development of the CIQ arose from a 2-day consensus conference in 1990 of a group of 14 people including rehabilitation clinicians, researchers and consumers. The CIQ was designed to be completed by people with acquired brain impairment (TBI), with assistance from an interviewer/informant if necessary. The CIQ is very widely used, particularly in the USA where it was developed for use in the TBI Model Systems data set. A brief history of the instrument's development is provided, along with a description of item content and administration/scoring procedures. Psychometric properties are reviewed and a critical commentary is provided. Key references are cited and in most cases the actual scale is included, giving the reader easy access to the instrument.
