ABSTRACT

This chapter is a comprehensive reference manual providing information on the Craig Handicap Assessment and Reporting Technique (CHART), which is a clinician rating scale, developed as a “simple, objective measure” of handicap in the community setting. The dimensions of the CHART were developed in accordance with the World Health Organization model of handicap. The CHART is designed as an interview, administered either face-to-face or via the telephone. The CHART was developed for people with spinal cord injury, who are predominantly a young group, without brain impairment. A brief history of the instrument's development is provided, along with a description of item content and administration/scoring procedures. Psychometric properties are reviewed and a critical commentary is provided. Key references are cited and in most cases the actual scale is included, giving the reader easy access to the instrument.
