ABSTRACT

This chapter is a comprehensive reference manual providing information on the Care and Needs Scale (CANS), which is a clinician rating scale, designed to amalgamate information obtained from a range of sources and use it to document support needs required for everyday functional activities and community living. It was developed for people with traumatic brain injury (TBI) and aims to capture the gamut of support needs, from very high to minimal requirements. A brief history of the instrument's development is provided, along with a description of item content and administration/scoring procedures. Psychometric properties are reviewed and a critical commentary is provided. Key references are cited and in most cases the actual scale is included, giving the reader easy access to the instrument.
