ABSTRACT

This chapter is a comprehensive reference manual providing information on the Craig Hospital Inventory of Environmental Factors (CHIEF), which is a self-rating scale with the aim of measuring perceived negative environmental influences; that is, the barriers “that keep people with disabilities from functioning within the household and community and from doing what they need or want to do”. It was designed “for the general population as well as for persons representing the full range of possible disabilities”. A brief history of the instrument's development is provided, along with a description of item content and administration/scoring procedures. Psychometric properties are reviewed and a critical commentary is provided. Key references are cited and in most cases the actual scale is included, giving the reader easy access to the instrument.
