ABSTRACT

This chapter is a comprehensive reference manual providing information on the Multidimensional and quality of lifeDisability Rating Scale (DRS), which is a clinician rating scale. It was developed for people with traumatic brain injury (TBI) to monitor progress from the acute stages of recovery through to longer-term outcome. The DRS is widely used in the USA, where it is a core instrument in the TBI Model Systems database. A brief history of the instrument's development is provided, along with a description of item content and administration/scoring procedures. Psychometric properties are reviewed and a critical commentary is provided. Key references are cited and in most cases the actual scale is included, giving the reader easy access to the instrument. The DRS is an eight-item scale covering four domains. The arousal and awareness domain uses three items from the Glasgow Coma Scal.
