ABSTRACT

This chapter is a comprehensive reference manual providing information on the Functional Status Examination (FSE), which is a structured interview that aims to measure functional status in physical, social and psychological domains, as well as “the full spectrum of possible outcomes”. It was designed for people with traumatic brain injury. The authors also considered the FSE would be appropriate for other conditions with abrupt onset and it has been used with people with subarachnoid haemorrhage. A brief history of the instrument's development is provided, along with a description of item content and administration/scoring procedures. Psychometric properties are reviewed and a critical commentary is provided. Key references are cited and in most cases the actual scale is included, giving the reader easy access to the instrument.
