ABSTRACT

This chapter is a comprehensive reference manual providing information on the Post-traumatic Amnesia Questionnaire (PTAQ), which is essentially an interview procedure, designed to enable the duration of post-traumatic amnesia (PTA) to be measured retrospectively using a standardized method. It was developed for people with traumatic brain injury. In situations where no record of PTA duration is available, it can be estimated retrospectively after the patient has emerged from PTA by the use of interview techniques, such as the PTAQ. A brief history of the instrument's development is provided, along with a description of item content and administration/scoring procedures. Psychometric properties are reviewed and a critical commentary is provided. Key references are cited and in most cases the actual scale is included, giving the reader easy access to the instrument.
