ABSTRACT

This chapter is a comprehensive reference manual providing information on the Capacity to Consent to Treatment Instrument (CCTI), which is an objective, clinician-administered test, developed to assess the capacity to consent to medical treatments. The CCTI comprises a set of questions about two vignettes, describing hypothetical medical problems and symptomatology. The CCTI is a practical and innovative method to assess competency to consent to treatment. Basic psychometric features have been examined, and it shows evidence of concurrent validity with neuropsychological tests of cognitive functioning and the capacity to distinguish among varying levels of cognitive functioning and impairment. A brief history of the instrument's development is provided, along with a description of item content and administration/scoring procedures. Psychometric properties are reviewed and a critical commentary is provided. Key references are cited and in most cases the actual scale is included, giving the reader easy access to the instrument.
