ABSTRACT

This chapter is a comprehensive reference manual providing information on the Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA), which is an objective, clinician-administered test developed for older people as a screening tool to identify mild cognitive impairment. Results of the initial study are promising and suggest that the MoCA will be a welcome addition to the new generation of cognitive screening tests. Psychometric properties indicate that the MoCA has good internal consistency, is a stable and valid instrument, and the item content has been selected and trialled to ensure the MoCA is sensitive. A brief history of the instrument's development is provided, along with a description of item content and administration/scoring procedures. Psychometric properties are reviewed and a critical commentary is provided. Key references are cited and in most cases the actual scale is included, giving the reader easy access to the instrument.
