ABSTRACT

This chapter is a comprehensive reference manual providing information on the Moss Attention Rating Scale (MARS), which is an observational rating scale, designed for use by rehabilitation clinicians to assess a range of specific components of attention in the everyday environment. A systematic approach was adopted in developing the MARS. The MARS has been developed and refined during the course of a number of empirical studies. The 22-item version avoids the administrative burden of the earlier longer 53-item version and is a good fit to a Rasch model, providing support for its construct validity. A brief history of the instrument's development is provided, along with a description of item content and administration/scoring procedures. Psychometric properties are reviewed and a critical commentary is provided. Key references are cited and in most cases the actual scale is included, giving the reader easy access to the instrument.
