ABSTRACT

This chapter is a comprehensive reference manual providing information on Communicative Effectiveness Index, which is an informant rating scale, designed to measure changes in functional communication in people with aphasia, predominantly after stroke. The aim was to develop an instrument to assess “the individual’s overall ability to get his/her meaning across or understand someone else’s meaning in daily-living situations, using any communication means at their disposal”. The authors’ particular interest was to measure change between assessment occasions. A brief history of the instrument's development is provided, along with a description of item content and administration/scoring procedures. Psychometric properties are reviewed and a critical commentary is provided. Key references are cited and in most cases the actual scale is included, giving the reader easy access to the instrument.
