ABSTRACT

This chapter is a comprehensive reference manual providing information on the Awareness Questionnaire (AQ), which is a rating scale, using clinician, informant and/or self-ratings. It was designed “to measure patient awareness of functioning in physical, cognitive and behavioural domains, as well as functioning in community activities”. The AQ was developed for people with traumatic brain injury, and has also been used with people with hypoxia, stroke and tumour. A brief history of the instrument's development is provided, along with a description of item content and administration/scoring procedures. Psychometric properties are reviewed and a critical commentary is provided. Key references are cited and in most cases the actual scale is included, giving the reader easy access to the instrument.
