ABSTRACT

This chapter is a comprehensive reference manual providing information on the Frontal Behavioral Inventory (FBI), which is a clinician rating scale administered in the context of an interview. It was designed to assess behavioural features associated with the frontal lobe dementias. It also aims to assist in differential diagnosis of FLD from depression, as well as Alzheimer’s disease and other types of dementias. The FBI is a well-designed instrument with item content that is consistent with established criteria for fronto-temporal dementia. Initial psychometric studies indicate that it has good inter-rater reliability, and evidence of construct validity and responsiveness. A brief history of the instrument's development is provided, along with a description of item content and administration/scoring procedures. Psychometric properties are reviewed and a critical commentary is provided. Key references are cited and in most cases the actual scale is included, giving the reader easy access to the instrument.
