ABSTRACT

This chapter provides a broad selection of scales that are relevant to the assessment of body functions other than the Mental functions. These functions are seeing, hearing, smell, touch, pain, ingestion, muscle power and muscle tone, and movement. The criteria for inclusion of scales are prevalence of the issue for people with ABI, the extent of clinical use of the scale and psychometric factors. In a number of areas there are variants of assessment scales for an area of functioning and these are grouped. The assessment scales presented have a varied provenance. Those assessing seeing, hearing, smell, touch, pain, and muscle power functions have developed over long periods within specific areas of medical practice. By contrast scales assessing movement functions were developed initially in the context of stroke and were later broadened to other areas of clinical practice.
