ABSTRACT

This chapter is a comprehensive reference manual providing information on the Semmes Weinstein Monofilament. A monofilament is a single strand of untwisted nylon fibre that has a standard diameter and properties. This method of assessment of touch functioning uses equipment that is found in most medical settings, but it is acknowledged these materials may not be universally available. These nylon monofilaments were developed to objectively assess touch functioning in the context of peripheral neuropathy. Monofilaments are provided in a range of diameters and are attached at a right angle to a holder. A brief history of the instrument's development is provided, along with a description of item content and administration/scoring procedures. Psychometric properties are reviewed and a critical commentary is provided. Key references are cited and in most cases the actual scale is included, giving the reader easy access to the instrument.
