ABSTRACT

In reviewing the information on the history of the Rookhope Valley, in an attempt to clarify it from the aspect of landscape change, and to encompass the minutiae of details into a more easily interpreted overview, it became apparent that there were periods where the changes to the landscape were of a consistent nature. The landscape changes typical of the Entrepreneurial phase were quite subtle, and do not reflect the significance of the social changes needed to bring them about. At the end of each growth phase, there is an overall effect on the landscape. If it were possible to measure this, then it would be possible to draw a graph of the changes on the landscape due to lead mining. The complete cycle, at whatever point the final phase is examined, leaves an impact on the environment in the form of the residual effect. This negative effect on the landscape could possibly be changed, if mining preservation is considered.
