ABSTRACT

In restrictive abortion environments, some feminist organizations both advocate for legal abortion and directly provide people seeking abortion with the information and support to safely use medications for abortion outside of the formal health sector—a model often called “accompaniment.” The Socorristas en Red—Feministas que Abortamos is a network of feminist collectives in Argentina that provide accompaniment to thousands seeking abortion. The Socorristas not only compensate for the state’s lack of abortion services, but also demand, through a variety of advocacy strategies and public activism, that the state guarantee legal abortion. First and foremost feminists, the Socorristas also reflect the principles of Latin American Social Medicine, where healthcare providers do not just provide services, but also actively participate in their democracies to advocate for health equity. These activists’ actions straddle the worlds of medicine, public health, democratic governance, and feminism, demonstrating a comprehensive strategy to ensure abortion access.
