ABSTRACT

This chapter offers an account of the Campaign’s history, related political debates and disputes, and the arguments and alliances that appeared after the presentation of a bill to legalize and decriminalize abortion in Argentina. The genealogy of the fight for legal abortion is key to understanding the Campaign’s influence and action, and to interpreting the way in which an individual right to autonomy and freedom has been resignified as a collective right. Reproductive rights, abortion, and diverse corporealities became commonplace topics in social and popular political organizations. The implementation of neoliberal models in the Latin American region led to economic crises and an exponential increase in unemployment and poverty. The new century began with another deep economic and political crisis. Public demonstrations in late 2001 allowed for the emergence of new forms of social organization and participation.
