ABSTRACT

Rural America is a land in crisis—but it is also a land of vast potential, given the grit and work ethic of its people and the growing interest among urban and suburban Americans in migrating to rural areas. The key to unlocking the potential of rural America is educating its youth for the careers of the future, and this means preparing them for college and supporting them as they pursue higher education. However, the relationship between rural America and higher education has grown fraught in recent years. Rural parents are wary of the high cost of college and often discourage their children from considering it. Technology can build bridges, connecting rural America to the knowledge and resources of the rest of the world. College for Every Student and its many rural partners have identified a number of proven strategies to prepare and motivate rural students to pursue higher education and promising careers.
