ABSTRACT

Chapter 3 begins with an overview of the Essential Skills–goal setting, teamwork, leadership, networking, perseverance, and agility. The six skills were identified from over 30 years of working with students. They were trademarked by CFES because of their important role in helping students become college and career ready. This chapter defines each skill, explains why it is essential, provides an activity that can be used with students, and a case study of an individual who exemplifies the particular skill being discussed. A rubric is provided that can help students assess where they are in their acquisition of a particular skill. The chapter ends by providing examples of ways CFES has developed these skills through digital tools, peer mentoring, and student leadership summits.
