ABSTRACT

This chapter begins by highlighting the power of college- and career-readiness advising through a case study on a student who attended and graduated college because of the help she received from an advisor. Two more case studies are used to demonstrate the obstacles to advancement that students in rural communities face: A lack of social capital, inaccurate information, trusted individuals may not be the right advisor, and school counselors who do not have the time or the training to help students with college- and career-ready support. The author discusses the critical role college- and career-ready advisors play in helping students and how CFES offers a certification program to train advisors. An overview of the training is provided. The chapter ends with several case studies demonstrating the effectiveness of a college- and career-readiness advisor.
