ABSTRACT

This chapter examines the factors that keep rural students from graduating college such as family buy-in, a culture clash, and the geographic location of higher education institutions. The chapter begins with the stories of two students, one who left college and one who stayed. Setting students up for college retention begins in high school with programs like Senior Survivors, which is discussed in this chapter. Strategies are also provided to help students learn how to be successful on college campuses. Students do better when they know how to take notes, organize their class materials, manage their time, and cope with stress. Lehigh University, Berea College, and the University of Georgia are highlighted at the end of their chapter for their work in helping keep rural students on track to graduation.
