ABSTRACT

Chapter 9 discusses the importance of education in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) and the challenges that rural students face in pursuing STEM study and careers. The chapter opens with a case study on a student who persevered to overcome obstacles and eventually earn her PhD. Limited exposure to STEM career paths is a primary challenge that rural students face. Not only do role models often not exist, but the known fact that STEM careers will take students out of their communities, prevents many from even considering it as a career choice. This chapter discusses why STEM matters for rural communities and how to cultivate STEM-ready students. Tips are shared on how to build STEM awareness with activities that are grade level specific. The chapter ends with ten success stories of rural students who became STEM professionals.
