ABSTRACT

This study utilizes data from 214 penalty shoot-outs that took place in two-leg ties of European Cups tournaments between the 1970/1971 and 2017/2018 seasons. We find that scoring more goals than the opponent in the second leg has a positive effect on the probability of winning the shoot-out, but only for the away team. This result confirms the positive effect of psychological momentum, as well as the negative effect of performing in front of a supportive audience.
