ABSTRACT

Positive impacts of leisure time physical activity (LTPA) on individual health and labor market outcomes have been widely acknowledged in the literature where physical activity programs are considered as investments for the health of the population. In addition to its impacts on health and labor market outcomes, this body of literature also focuses on socioeconomic and demographic correlates of physical activity. While there is a growing literature on LTPAs, there are limited papers primarily focusing on participation in sports, and its determinants. The purpose of this chapter is to fill this gap in the literature. Using the Canadian General Social Survey, this chapter examines the determinants of participation in sports. While focusing on correlates of sport participation, a wide range of determinants including socioeconomic and demographic factors as well as spousal participation in sports will be examined.
