Chapter Author – Shane Lonergen

Chapter Number & Title – chapter 4 Developing and maintaining an effective learning environment

Cultivating a ‘Behaviour for Learning’ classroom is one of the biggest challenges a beginning teacher in the UK faces when entering the classroom for the first time. It has been argued that behaviour management does not live in a vacuum but must be combined with appropriate teaching and learning techniques to cultivate positive behaviour for learning. This chapter aids the beginning teacher in identifying the classroom behaviour characteristics of the Behaviour for Learning classroom and proceeds to arm the teacher with the necessary tools and techniques to foster a healthy learning environment. This chapter draws on the experience and literature of behaviour specialists such as Bill Rogers, Sam Ellis, Janet Tod and John Hattie with anecdotal evidence of the author's own experiences with these tools throughout his career.
