ABSTRACT

Time, and it is rumoured the quality of the papers returned in the June examinations, have proved two things —viz., that few apprentices have elected to remarn in the army, and that the large majority have quickly, settled down in a manner which was as surprising to their employers as to themselves. Exception might be made to this by the fact that most apprentices, who have returned to their offices, display a tendency to “run the show,” especially those who attained to any rank which gave them authority over others. Army discipline has also left its mark, and as the majority of returned apprentices “Sir ” and pay due respect to their seniors, they also in return demand the same respect being paid to them by their juniors. Regarding the attitude of employers to returned apprentices, there are few apprentices who do not say that they have received very considerate treatment, and that they are given every opportunity.
