ABSTRACT

In modern days mechanical devices have been introduced successfully in many departments of book - keeping and mathematics, but it has not hitherto been thought possible to apply a mechanical system to the compilation of statistics where some amount of judgment is necessary before an item can be properly classified. In order to transfer the information given on the Census sheet to card, it is fixed into a small travelling frame which are keys similar to the keys of typewriting machine, and as the appropriate keys are pressed the required holes are punched so as to give correctly to auy one acquainted with the code the same information as that which appears on the sheets. A machine is also employed for combining the numbers ascertained. The totals for each district are punched upon cards in the same manner as indicated, and when these cards are passed through this machine, it automatically adds them together and shows grand total.
