ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on the therapeutic relationship between South Asian American identified therapists working with South Asian identified clients. Building a collaborative, trusting relationship is essential in therapy. As therapists consider working with South Asian American clients, therapists’ cultural competency should be informed by a general understanding of South Asian American culture but also better understood by exploring clients’ identities, social context, and values. Paying attention to and checking in about the therapeutic relationship helps clients process their feelings, allows the client to be present with their feelings, enhances relationships, and to “transfer their learning to other relationships”. Depending on the client's exposure and experience with therapy, it is important to be prepared to discuss expectations of the therapist and treatment. Clients may have to be educated on the therapeutic process and expectations of therapy.
