ABSTRACT

This chapter aims to broadly explore what it means to be “South Asian American.” However, similar to the issues created by homogenizing all Asian Americans, the South Asian American identity can be somewhat of a misnomer due to the diverse individuals and range of experiences within the community. Accordingly, the chapter focuses on reviewing various aspects of South Asian American identities that may be more common among various South Asian subgroups, and based on the opinions of the authors. Specifically, it provides a brief history of South Asian American immigration, stereotypes and labels associated with South Asian Americans, and how the community is depicted within popular culture and media. The chapter also provides an overview of identity theories specific to South Asian Americans, reviews psychological research focused on South Asian American identity and mental health, as well as provides psychotherapeutic recommendations for mental health practitioners.
