ABSTRACT

I investigate the experiences of collegiate jazzwomen, their attitudes toward being in the jazz field and jazz improvisation, and their personality traits. Factors that affect their collegiate experiences include negative stereotypes about their sex, lack of access to female mentors, stereotype threat, and sexual harassment and discriminatory behavior from their male peers and faculty. Jazz faculty members set the tone for how male students will treat their female peers, and negative modeling is detrimental to all students.
