ABSTRACT

The ‘Modern Girl’ image burst into global prominence in the interwar years (Weinbaum and Modern Girl Around the World Research Group, 2020). Her vitality and jazz-loving style was a contrast to the bleak devastation of World War I. Her features of short-bobbed hair and androgenous style were seen in all forms of media, from fashion advertisements commodifying her, to real performers who embraced her likeness. Furthermore, the Modern Girl represented more than visual characteristics throughout the world. She represented ideas of modernity, women’s rights, and changing gender roles.
