ABSTRACT

In the recent past, Hamburg has become a diverse city and acquired a reputation for tolerance as well as for dialogue, especially between religious communities. This led to an interesting development both in societal discourse and in theological thought as it concerns coexistence and diversity. The latter is outlined in this contribution, together with a first attempt to trace relationships with historical precedents, impulses from discourses both in the Muslim heartlands and in the minority Muslim groups in the West, as well as possible influences on global developments.
