ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on names and theatre companies that have become emblematic of cultural, aesthetic, and institutional transformations in post-Soviet Russian theatre. Among emerging trends are the rise of independent theatre collectives and the development of verbatim theatre. The chapter also discusses innovative and controversial work of a new generation of Russian directors and theatre makers who employed alternative spaces, experimented with site-specific performance, and explored the principles of postdramatic theatre. As the country went through a series of economic upheavals, Russian theatre’s institutional structure and funding models evolved offering more opportunities for artistic innovation and multidisciplinary collaboration.
